The teuk Phos district authority in Kampong Chhnang province has released a driver of an overloaded truck which broke a Khlong Popoak commune Bailey bridge after the company owner promised to pay damages and restore the bridge, the district military police commander Den Sambun said on Sunday. The bridge collapsed on Friday causing massive traffic congestion for many hours. No one was injured. ”The Bailey bridge was built as a temporary measure as the previous stone bridge was destroyed and has to be rebuilt. Following the accident, the public works department and the local authority decided not to permit heavy delivery trucks to use the bridge,” Sambun said. Khlong Popoak commune chief Phoeuk Hoeng told The Post on Sunday that the bridge does not have sufficient middle pillars, causing it to collapse easily. “Although the bridge was temporary, we need to consider drivers’ safety. It was not built in compliance with technical standards. In addition, the driver is at fault because the truck exceeded the maximum weight limit,” he said. A Transport Ministry report last month said the authorities had intercepted a total of 166 overloaded vehicles.
