Newly appointed South Korean ambassador to Cambodia Park Jung-wook paid a May 31 courtesy call on Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol in Phnom Penh, where he expressed his interest in the logistics sector. According to the ministry, Park pledged to promote and strengthen communication with the private sector in South Korea to explore potential investment in the near future. “[Park] lauded the progress and development of Cambodia, especially in the field of transport infrastructure, which is significantly growing,” it said. The envoy expressed his strong commitment to strengthening cooperative relations between the two countries. Chanthol welcomed the ambassador and offered his appreciation for Park’s willingness to assist with the Kingdom’s development, particularly in terms of logistics, transport and human resources. He also updated Park on plans to complete the connection of Cambodia’s multi-means transport and logistics systems in order to make it more competitive. The minister also thanked South Korea for its assistance over the years, including the construction of several major projects such as the upcoming Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridges Project (Old Market to Chroy Changvar and Chroy Changvar to Arey Ksat), noting that the bridges will become an attractive feature of Phnom Penh and a symbol of the friendship between the two countries. He added that tenders are currently underway for the project, and that an environmental impact report is being compiled. The Kingdom is studying a number of large infrastructure projects, including the Tonle Bassac Navigation and Logistics System Project, the development of the deep-sea port Preah Sihanouk province project and the International Multi-Purpose Logistics and Port Centre in Kampot province. Construction of the Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway is scheduled to begin this year, while a proposed Phnom Penh-Siem Reap Expressway is undergoing “final” studies.
