Prime Minister Hun Sen thanked the Government of South Korea for its plans to build a bridge over the Mekong River to connect Phnom Penh to the island of Arey Ksat.The report of the study on the construction of the Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridge across the Mekong River connecting Phnom Penh to Arey Ksat by South Korea has been submitted to the Royal Government of Cambodia for review and decision on the location and format of the bridge.
The plan to build the Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridge was officially announced by the Ambassador of South Korea to Cambodia, Park Hyung Kyung, during the ground-breaking ceremony of the improvement project on NR 48, this morning. Ambassador Park stated that the plan is a response to the request of Prime Minister Hun Sen during the ground-breaking ceremony of NR 2 and 22 on February 2020.According to the Ambassador, a Korean company has conducted a feasibility study and recently submitted a report to the Cambodian government, and based on this report, the Cambodian government will decide on the construction site and the format of the bridge.
He added that the Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridge will contribute to improving traffic flow in Phnom Penh and function as a Landmark for Phnom Penh tourism and also become a symbol of continuation and strengthening of friendship between Korea and the people of Cambodia.
“I believe that the Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridge will not only contribute relieving of traffic congestion in the centre of Phnom Penh for the next 100 years, but also become a tourist attraction in Phnom Penh,” Ambassador Park said, “Especially if this Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridge is built as a beautiful cable-stayed bridge, all Koreans living in Cambodia will commit to travel to Phnom Penh again to see the completed bridge.”
According to the Premier, the new bridge will also facilitate the process of making Arey Ksat a satellite city in the future.
Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport, Sun Chanthol, told local news that the construction of the Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridge across the Mekong River from Phnom Penh to the Noble Kingdom may begin in 2022.
