Phnom Penh: The Ministry of Public Works and Transport announced the sale of 26,659 special and personalized vehicle plates last year, generating approximately $16 million in revenue. This initiative, which began in 2016, offers vehicle owners the opportunity to purchase distinctive plate numbers for their vehicles at a premium price, with the added benefit of retaining the plate upon the sale of the vehicle. During the ministry’s annual meeting on February 28, it was reported that in 2023 alone, a total of 652,163 vehicles were registered, including 604 electric vehicles (EVs). Since 1990, Cambodia has seen a cumulative registration of 7,563,395 vehicles, of which 1,335 are EVs. To support the growing adoption of electric vehicles, the ministry has established 18 EV charging stations across the nation. The Royal Government of Cambodia is actively pursuing environmental sustainability through the promotion of fuel-efficient and electric vehicles. It has set ambitious targets to convert at least 40 percent of all cars and 70 percent of motorcycles to electric by the year 2050. In line with these goals, the government has formulated a strategic policy aimed at transforming Cambodia into a key production hub for automotive and electronic components. This strategy is expected to attract further investments in the sector and enhance the country’s export capabilities.
