UK ambassador to Cambodia Dominic Williams invited the leadership of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to participate in a January 26 consultation of several developmental projects, including a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project for Phnom Penh. The consultative programme also focused on mobilising the private sector for sustainable development in Cambodia. The invitation followed a January 16 meeting between Williams and minister Sun Chanthol. Chanthol accepted the invitation, saying he would lead several senior officials to the consultation. In addition to highlighting the rapid growth of Cambodia's infrastructure and transportation sector, the minister mentioned several projects which are under review by the ministry. These projects include water transport via the Bassac River to the seaport in Kampot province, which would facilitate faster transport and reduce costs. Chanthol also mentioned the studies of an automated guideway transit system, a subway and a monorail project to contribute to a reduction in traffic congestion in Phnom Penh. In addition, he discussed the feasibility study of a project to upgrade the northern Phnom Penh-Poipet railway line.
