The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has issued fresh guidelines for motorists using Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway as many lack awareness about safe driving on the country’s first highway.A statement issued yesterday by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport called for mandatory preparations before driving on expressway such as checking tyre pressure, turning on signals, lights, brake lights, and fastening seat belts, among others.
The motorists were urged to check the warning signs before entering the expressway and visit a toll booth to receive necessary safety information.
The Ministry has also given the details of the lanes, including those for regular use, overtaking and lanes for emergency stops, as well as speed limits.
The statement also includes location of entrances and exits, lanes, rest stops and other services provided.
Ministry of Public Works and Transport spokesman Kong Vimean said yesterday that the Ministry had introduced technical guidelines for highway users and that if they should abide by traffic laws. He also urged motorists to avoid speeding as it might cause explosion of tyres.
“We are monitoring the test runs on the expressway to find out the problems, and if we encounter a problem, ministry and the road construction company will have to solve it,” he said.
A minimum speed of 60 kmph and a maximum speed of 120 kmph is permitted on the expressway.
