From September 1, authorities will start a trial run for the new demerit point system to curb traffic violations.Under the system, a driver’s licence will have a score of 12 points, and points will be deducted based on the offence and when the motorist exhausts all the points, the driving licence will be cancelled.
The demerit point system will be implemented on January 1. Khmer Times reporter Nang Veasna and photographer Tep Sony speak to motorists about the demerit system.I support this method as it will definitely curb traffic accidents. Motorists will be careful on the road as getting a new licence after losing all points will be very difficult.
I don’t know how to talk about this. But if the ministry implements this I’ll obey and I will pay more attention in driving than before. While driving, I am responsible for the lives of passengers. The demerit system is good. I firmly believe it will help in reducing traffic accidents nationwide. I want to see it implemented not only in cities but also in rural areas. I really support the decision.I support the new initiative taken by the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. It is a good move and the system will reduce the number of offenders who do not respect traffic laws and giving trouble to other motorists.I don’t know how I should react. But if the new measure will be implemented, I will follow it. I will obey it as I wish to see less traffic accidents. This move is good because drivers will pay more attention than before. In my opinion, traffic accidents will drop. I really congratulate and strongly support the Ministry’s decision. have come across several accidents during my trips from Phnom Penh to Svay Rieng. I think new system will make drivers afraid of points deduction and I believe the demerit system can reduce traffic incidents by 50-60%.It is good and can reduce traffic chaos because it will make drivers pay more attention while on the roads. I definitely support this new measure of reducing points from the licence for the traffic offence.
