To promote electric vehicles or EVs in the country, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport is to showcase for the first time different electric vehicles and related technology later this week in Phnom Penh. Minister for Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol has invited EV manufacturers to join the event. He was speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony for a cold storage facility in Kandal province yesterday. On Saturday the ministry will showcase the EVs at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, he said. EV and motorcycle manufacturers will display their products and conduct panel discussions on the EV strategy of Cambodia, Chanthol said. He said the event was in line with the government’s plan to promote EVs in the country. He also added that the Ministry is in talks with petrol filling stations to install EV charging points. Ten EV charging stations are to be built within this year, Chanthol said, and added the EV charging stations will also be set up in the provinces of Battambang, Siem Reap and Preah Sihanouk. “We have talked with petrol stations such as Caltex, Total and PTT. They agreed to install the EV charging stations,” Chanthol said. “So, hopefully at the end of this year, we will see at least ten EV charging stations,” he said. The number of registered electric cars in the country is believed to be few and not more than a hundred. According to Chanthol, the Ministry is also working on ways to recycle and dispose batteries from the EVs.
