A new landfill, which is under construction in Kampot province’s Toek Chhou district is expected to be able to handle between 70 and 90 tonnes of trash daily and ease garbage woes in neighbouring Kampot city. Construction on the $2 million landfill, sited on more than 10 hectares of land, began last week and the contractor plans to complete the project within six months. Kampot provincial governor Chea Tay told Khmer Times on Tuesday that the construction of a new landfill in Kampot was part of the government’s urban development project under a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). “The new landfill will provide another source of revenue for the province, when some garbage is processed into fertilizer,” he said. Kampot province is popular among visitors and so has the tourism sector developed rapidly. Before the Covid-19 outbreak in Cambodia, nearly two million visitors visited Kampot each year. The presence of tourists generated a lot of waste which was collected and dumped at the existing landfill which has reached full capacity in Kampot city,Tay added. The fenced-up landfill consists of two compartments, two wastewater treatment ponds, a sewage and drainage system, an administrative building, a well-equipped guardhouse to control access to the landfill, a weighing station and a storage and sorting facility. Tay instructed relevant local authorities to cooperate with the contractor to speed up the construction of the landfill as planned to meet the needs of the provincial administration to improve sanitation and the environment in Kampot. The landfill project was approved by the government through the Ministry of Public Works and Transport under the Corridor 2 Development Project. It is being constructed by Heng Sambath Import Export Company.
