The Ministry of Public Works in collaboration with the Ministry of Education plan to create a new engineering course for public works and transportation technical skills to build more efficient infrastructure and further growth.
Minister of Public Works Sun Chanthol said on Tuesday at the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing that this is the first time both ministries have cooperated to establish specialised training for technical skills focussed on building bridges, roads, ports and railways.
He expressed his pride and confidence that Cambodian students will have sufficient capacity to build Cambodia’s transport infrastructure effectively and with high quality after graduating from this programme.
“I want to see Cambodians of this generation and future generations have the same abilities as our ancestors in the past, who had the ability to build beautiful, quality temples that have lasted for… thousands of years and are famous all over the world,” Chanthol said.
Minister of Education Hang Chuon Naron said that it is a good start between both ministries to create human resources and both the Techo Sen Institute of Public Works and Transport, in collaboration with the Institute of Technology of Cambodia, will provide teaching and training to students in the public work sector.
“I hope that in the future, we can build a bridge to cross the Mekong river and new railways by ourselves,” he said.
Chanthol said that in the academic year 2020-2021, the institutes will recruit 200 students. However, the two ministries are still discussing the tuition fees and scholarships.
He added that the ministry will make efforts to seek funds from development partners to provide scholarships to students who are struggling but have the ability and ambition to study this speciality at the institute.
Chanthol also thanked the working groups of the two ministries for achieving remarkable results by coordinating students and interns to study at various construction sites.
