[Khmer times] - PM Hun Manet urges drivers to exercise vigilance, adhere to traffic law and assume full responsibility

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called on drivers to exercise vigilance, adhere to traffic law and assume full responsibility, not just for fear of being caught by traffic police. The premier spoke on February 19, 2024 during a groundbreaking ceremony for Chak Angrae Krom Bridge, Phnom Penh. “The issue of police fines shouldn’t concern us too much regarding where the police are stationed. We should be concerned about our citizens taking responsibility for their actions: driving within the speed limit and without consuming excessive alcohol,” the premier underscored.“The driver may have escaped, but the residents living along the road remain in fear. Those residing near the signs may not be as fearful, but others elsewhere will be frightened because accidents can still occur, resulting in loss of life,” the premier added. Recently, Kampot provincial police erected a sign along National Road 3 indicating speed limits below 80 km/h. The sign also features an image of a traffic police officer enforcing speed limits. In this case, Prime Minister stated that while such signs may prompt drivers to reduce speed where they are present, they may subsequently accelerate where there are no signs.
