Cambodia will work together with a Chinese company to study the Bassac River waterway and logistics for a project to improve Cambodia’s waterway network to streamline and improve connectivity for economic benefits. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport is planning to establish a new waterway utilising a canal from Bassac river to the sea in Kep province for the transport and tourism sectors without having to go through Vietnam. The plans were made known during a meeting between Minister of Public Works Sun Chanthol a Chinese company – Transportation Consultants Co Ltd – representatives via an online meeting on April 22. Speaking at the meeting, Chanthol said that the project would improve waterway transport and logistics, as well as improve Cambodia’s waterway network to have a smooth connection. “The shipping route and logistics system of Tonle Bassac River will make a positive change in Cambodia’s waterway transportation. “It will benefit the national economy and help promote the use of water transport over land transport,” he said. Cambodia, he said, “ has a rich network of rivers, including the Mekong, Tonle Sap, Tonle Bassac, Sekong, Tonle Sesan, Tonle Srepok, but Cambodia has yet to fully exploit the huge potential of these natural resources”.
